A Progressive Board

With High Visibility

Coldwater Lobster Association as a whole, is led by a ‘progressive’ Board of Directors who are actively engaged in regular consultation with industry stakeholders, government agencies, regulators, and others for the betterment of the lobster industry.

Coldwater Lobster Association is governed by volunteer Board of Directors comprised of current lobster license holders throughout LFA 34, who hold a vested interest in the lobster industry and its future. Our Board of Directors are considered to be visionaries and community leaders, who oversee the operations and staff, guides decision making, and support the organization through active participation in the Association’s mission. Our Directors serve for two-year terms.

Our high visibility ensures Southwest Nova fishermen are heard and their concerns are addressed by regulatory policy makers at all levels of government.

Our President

Tommy Amirault

Tommy is a 6th generation fisherman who has been involved in the commercial fishery for 36 years, 24 of which he captained his own vessel. Tommy fishes out of Pubnico, one of the largest fishing ports in Nova Scotia, and has called this his home port his entire life. Prior to his elected position as President, Tommy was one of the founding members of Coldwater Lobster Association where he served as a Director from its inception in 2014.

From his earliest memories, the ocean was Tommy’s playground.  His grandfather would often take him to Seal Island where he would explore the shoreline and listen attentively to the endless stories his grandfather would recite.  He was often reminded that while the ocean can be the greatest blessing, she also presented great challenges and deserved the utmost respect.  Growing up in Pubnico, Tommy was immersed in the culture of a rural fishing community and naturally, spent a great deal of time around the wharves.  His father, along with several local fishermen, took Tommy aboard their boats to go fishing with them so he could ‘learn the ropes’ in hopes that one day, he would operate his own enterprise.

Tommy is a multi-species fisherman having fished lobster, halibut, haddock, herring, cod, swordfish, tuna, scallop, slime eel, hake, and cusk.  He has fished anywhere from the ‘Grey Zone’ to Stone Fence.  Tommy has participated in DFO’s annual Atlantic halibut survey for the last 14 years.

Tommy has sat on the Lower East Pubnico wharf committee and was the Port Representative for Lower East Pubnico for several years. Tommy volunteers his time to keep fishermen in LFA 34 informed on matters concerning the future of the lobster fishery in Southwest Nova. He has shown great interest in pursuing scientific initiatives and as such, has collaborated on several lobster science research projects to seek out solutions for the betterment of the fishery. Tommy is committed to advocating on behalf of the commercial fishing industry and he has exhibited great leadership as an engaged, forward-thinking fisherman for the region.
